What Does Myrcene Do?

This is a monoterpene which means that it is the ground zero for the manufacturing of other terpenes. It is found that cannabis strains with more than 0.05% Myrcene have more sedative, couch locking effects while those that fall below that percentage have a more psychoactive reputation. Myrcene actually influences an endogenous opiod system in the body which is thought to be why it can create such valued pain relieving, heavy effects.

Myrcene is one of the most researched terpenes and separate studies have concluded anti inflammatory and in high doses anti-insomnia effects. It also helps other cannabinoids pass through the blood brain barrier which maximizes the effects of whatever marijuana strain we chose that day. The last super cool thing that myrcene can do is maximize the saturation level of the endocannabinoid system’s CB1 receptor.

Analgesic: Relieves pain.

Antibacterial: Slows bacterial growth.

Anti-Diabetic: Helps mitigate the effects of diabetes.

Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammation systemically.

Anti-Insomnia: Aids with sleep.

Anti-Proliferative/Anti-Mutagenic: Inhibits cell mutation, including cancer cells.

Antipsychotic: Tranquilizing effects relieve symptoms of psychosis.

Antispasmodic: Suppresses muscle spasms.

Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCv) Cannabinoid Profile

Terpenes

Formula: C19H26O2

THCv Strains: Durban Poison, Girl Scout Cookies, Tangie, Pie Face OG, Hawaiian Dutch

THCv is comprised of two fewer carbon bonds than the more familiar THC. And although the psychoactive components of this compound are not fully researched many cannabis connoisseurs search out this cannabinoid in hopes of it’s coveted believed effects. Plants that are high in THCv usually derive from China, IndiaNepal, Thailand, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, as well as southern and western Africa. The strain that almost always shows high amounts of THCv and even tested with 1% THCv at the 2014 Seattle High Times Cannabis Cup is Durban Poison from South Africa.

Although this cannabinoid effect the same CB1 and CB2 receptors it also seems to have an adverse effect on some receptors and suppresses our appetite. THCv is also the cannabinoid responsible for somewhat psychedelic effects of cannabis and can be highly psychoactive. The mind remains crisp and clear with THCv strains which is just one of the many reasons that these strains are so highly coveted. Other studies show that this cannabinoid can stimulate bone growth, reduce panic attacks and help with Alzeihmer’s. It is also possible that THCv may help with diabetes.

Benefits:

  • Psychoactive
  • Energetic
  • Stimulate bone growth
  • Help with diabetes
  • Dulls the appetite
  • Curb emotions and Suppress anxiety attacks
  • Help with Alzheimer’s
  • Reduce Parkinson’s associated tremors

Pot-O-Coffee Hemp CBD Coffee Pod Review

Product Review

When I saw this cannabis coffee company on Instagram I had to reach out to them in hopes of trying my own brew. The brand is bright, fresh and seems to value safe dosing which is a trait in the industry that I really appreciate. On the other hand, K-Cups are one of the leading contributions to landfills and are kind of killing the planet. For that reason I was glad they included a loose tea that can cut back on the environmental waste a teensy bit since I use a metal tea ball. I’ll post that review in the coming weeks.

That being said, I popped over to the future mother-in-laws place to try this little pod out in their Keurig coffee maker so I could understand what CBD coffee really was. Cowbae and I are kind of coffee snobs. He makes his morning java in a stovetop Italian espresso machine and I use a french press, so as far as the flavor of coffee goes it’s not an artisanal brew. But don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t suck. It reminds me a lot of Folger’s if you made it in a Keurig, nothing to write home about but definitely does the job. I made the largest cup possible, so that might have something to do with it. The real shining moment for this product is the mind blowing effects.

PotOCoffee2 copy

As I drank the cup and watched Cowbae cook some lunch the music became a part of my energy, I could feel the sounds moving through me and just bobbed my head along with out thinking about it. That’s when I knew that the CBD kicked in. All of my anxiety had melted away but I was still alert and certainly awake. There was absolutely no jittery feeling that I usually get from my afternoon coffee, just mellow but vibrantly awake. As for Potocoffee3my inflammation, it melted right away as it usually does with this magical cannabinoid in my system. I have been isolating and opening up my upper back and shoulders for a couple of months now and it’s been a sore, painful experience. But a few sips in absolutely all of the sore, yucky gunk had completely dissipated and I was left ooey gooey. These effects almost make the environmental impact disappear, almost.

All in all, I loved this amazing combination of caffeine and CBD but I cannot wait until there are fresh grounds available outside of the K-Cup option. Also thank you to Pot-O-Coffee for the samples, absolutely brilliant job.

What Are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids, Cannabis

THC and CBD are two highly publicized cannabinoids, but there are also over 100 other cannabinoids found in the composition of the the resinated flowering buds of a feminine unfertilized cannabis plant. Everyone is born with an endocannabinoid system and endocannabinoids in their bodies. When there is an issue with the natural production of endocannabinoids or a disruption in the receptor connections of the endocannabinoid system it can lead to many different health complications. Cannabinoids can help to repair cell communications and stabilize our internal health.

Leafly Cannabinoid Wheel

When cannabis is inhaled or ingested it is proven that cannabinoids bond to CB1 (mind) and CB2 (body) receptors throughout the system to relieve common and serious ailments. Since different strains are made up of different cannabinoid combinations it is imperative to understand the cannabinoid composition of a strain to know the healing properties it could incur. Almost all good dispensaries have test results available on all strains with at least 5 cannabinoid percentages. Become familiar with leafing through these results to better familiarize yourself with your medicine.

Through the next weeks, or even months, we will be breaking down cannabinoids and learn through teaching. Look out for cannabinoid profiles coming to the blog soon.

What Are Cannabis Terpenes?

Cannabis, Terpenes

Those who are patients or in recreational states are probably familiar with the word terpene. For those that don’t know, a terpene is a large and very diverse class of organic compounds that is produced by conifer plants and sometimes even some insects like butterflies and termites. Cannabis contains over 200 known terpenes, they are also present in almost all natural flora. The name comes from turpentine because terpenes are a major component of the resin. It is thought that terpenes are created by the plant to deter herbivores with the aroma or draw in carnivores that eat the herbivore threatening the plant. To know the difference between the two most used buzz words, terpenes are hydrocarbons while terpenoids contain other bonded atoms. These compounds are a base element of aromatherapy essential oils and are widely found in cannabis.

As the cannabis world continues to grow, strains are becoming more and more irrelevant as different grows are putting out completely different phenos under the same names as strains that can create very different effects. Terps grow in glands within trichomes on unfertilized feminine seeds. The way that terpenes interact with the endocannabinoid system is very similar to the way that cannabinoids do. They actually work better when they’re all together, each plant is made up of a different composition of the large quantity of terpenes known today. Terpenes have also shown to affect the dopamine and serotonin production, enhance norepinephrine activity and giving way to relief from depression and even pain.

At the most rudimentary level, terpenes are the compound that give cannabis it’s delicious smell. With each strain having a different composition of terpenes it makes more sense why each strain can have a similar but very different effect on people. Terpenes vaporize at about 156°F which means that with a direct flame most of the terpenes are burnt off. That is why vaping cannabis tastes so much better, we’re getting the full terpene profile. When I was a budtender I would always tell patients that couldn’t decide on a strain “Your nose knows.” and entice them to take a whiff. I personally love strains with a musky smell (myrcene) and floral (linalool), both of which help pain. And when I’m feeling depressed a lemon (limonene) strain always makes me drool a bit. Having a conscious understanding of terpenes and their aromas can help us to gain a deeper knowledge of how the plant can heal each of our individual systems.

Northern Lights Big Bud Strain Review

Indica Cultivar, Product Review

[Northern Lights x Big Bud][90% Indica]

Northern Lights #10 is one of my favorite strains, it’s relaxing and lulls us into sleep just ever so gently. Big Bud is one of those Indicas that I like to compare to a big huge WWE star sitting on you, it just hits hard and then stays there. So, naturally, mixing these together is a recipe for success, heavy Indica effects that can end with us intently staring at nothing, open mouthed. Save this strain for those sleepless nights or after work on a hyper stressful day.

Northern Lights 2

How Does It Hit The Senses?

These nugs are chunky but still in pine tree shaped bud structure. Dark purples and light forest green are complimented by light orange but slightly brown pistils all garnished by a blanket of sparkling trichomes. The bouquet of aromas is prominently aligned with the Northern Lights genetics. Full frontal sweet floral geranium mixed with ripe blackberries. The finish rings true of Big Bud with a small bit of woody cedar to finish. Definitely don’t expect wispy or heavily packed chunked bud, this is definitely a combination type nug.

What are The Effects?

Lift the spirits while dropping down the adrenaline for a relaxed but semi-aware stone. This one can definitely be the perms-high stuck in the couch sort of effect so save it for the evening time unless you have immense pain to deal with. Definitely, as always, try it out for the first time in a safe space after the day’s work is finished. After toking you’ll find yourself immediately relaxed in the ocular region and that relaxation quickly seeps into the brain to mellow out all stress and anxieties that are left over from the day. Initial reaction is a bit of face contortion for some followed by possible hyper awareness of the hands, eyebrows, etc. These effects will slowly seep into pain relief and release muscle tension. Enjoy a long, heavy stone for about 2-4 hours depending on tolerance.

Rolling Papers a Cannabis Movie Review

Cannabis, Movie Reviews

Rolling PapersI go through real phases in my Netflix binging habits but I haven’t been much in the mood for documentaries for a couple of years now, until I saw Rolling Papers on my feed. As a cannabis writer I think it’d be dumb if I didn’t at least give it a chance, and I’m glad that I did but for mixed reasons. The film, directed by Mitch Dickman and team, follow Richard Baca who was historically appointed as the world’s first cannabis newspaper director for the Denver Post in 2014. The Cannabisis now one of the leading sources on every aspect of cannabis that exists in the nation and this story shows the very beginning stages.

This monumental change in cannabis legislation created an entirely new aspect of journalism: pot journalism. So many aspects to reporting on this plant that weren’t kosher enough to mention in mainstream media are now not only free to report on but avidly read. The Cannabis drastically raised the readership of The Denver Post while other major papers were being shut down. They report on policy news, parenting, recipes, strain reviews and pretty much anything else that has to do with cannabis. All of the manufacturing, processing, edibles, grow etc. information that they show and give is nothing new to Californians and Arizonians, the art of cannabis remains the same despite legalization.

See, I haven’t been to Colorado yet. I know, blasphemous, a out and proud stoner hasn’t visited any recreational states. But hey guys, I want a lot of kids someday but I have to buy a house first. So I rarely go anywhere except into my imagination because $. But anyways, back to the  point, It was refreshing to know that there wasn’t some magical secret to the industry in CO, that the difference was simply a freedom in the law. A minor freedom that is. The documentary touches on the utter confusion in the government as they attempt to create proper regulating laws with absolutely no data to rest them on. It also visits CPS multiple times in reference to their assault on legal cannabis users that are being persecuted. These issues need to be talked about because people are getting their kids taken away as lawmakers struggle to keep up. Kudos to shining a spotlight on these injustices.

I did have some issues with the film though, and maybe I’m being a big old butthead because I consider this plant medicinal and I consider myself a writer. First of all, why is their reviewer Jake smoking out of a pipe to review strains? That’s not real right? That is possibly the worst way to review a clean high and the actual taste that I have ever seen. Secondly, Colorado needs to stop calling it marijuana all the time. But I think I’m alone in this. I just so avidly believe that this is a medical plant and it’s hard for me to see it reduced to such a party drug. Recreational makes me so pleased because I’m no longer scared of cops for having my medicine but it also makes me sad because it’s somewhat overshadowing how healing cannabis can be. Cannabis not marijuana is close to my heart because marijuana is a word attached to a heavy stigma after many years of slander. So I guess I must accept recreational terminology etc. because with it comes freedom… sort of. And that’s where I’ll stop. This movie is worth a watch for anyone with interest in cannabis and/or cannabis journalism and I’d give it 3 out of 5 doobies for content. Watch the trailer below.

Strawberry Cough the Creativity Booster

Hybrid Cultivar, Product Review, Sativa Cultivar

[Strawberry Fields x Haze][80% Sativa]

I absolutely love Strawberry Cough, I know you’re probably like huh? Because I so often say that I don’t like Sativa strains but there are a select few that seriously hit just right. Strawberry Cough is one of them because it tingles my creative muscles and curbs my anxiety ever so slightly while still delivering a slightly heavy stone. This specific strain of Strawberry Cough holds nostalgic feelings for me because it was a house strain at the first dispensary I ever worked at. So, when in California it is a must have because they seriously just don’t grow it like this in Arizona. Experience joyous giggles and silly thoughts while medicating with friends or propel yourself into a meteor of exciting creative ideas.

Strawberry Cough 2 copy

How Does It Hit The Senses?

Prepare to be astonished with the absolutely overwhelming strawberry goodness smell that comes from just one teeny nugget of Strawberry Cough. The sweet strawberry aroma mingles with a sharp marigold that creates an almost cheese like scent. I’ve really smelled nothing like this strain before in my life, it is truly fantastic. Strawberry Cough buds are a bright, almost lime, green with vibrant orange pistils. There will be some large nuggets from the yield but generally this breed will be tons of crystal trichome packed little buds.

What Are The Effects?

One very worth mentioning aspect of this strain is that it tastes exactly how it smells, and that’s coming from a girl that smoked it out of a homemade apple pipe. When inhaled you’ll feel almost immediate stimulation in the ocular region. Ride along a soothing wave of balance between stimulation and relaxation as the strain washes over you. Neck and shoulder pain begins to cease and the mind begins to race through creative and exciting new thought patterns. It’s possible that the new brain activity will provide a little bit of facial contortion and then it begins to mellow out. The strain is very active but that activity is hyper internalized so that it can be utilized within the mind itself like creativity generally is. I recommend this for any and every writer that I’ve ever met. Just make sure to keep your pen nearby.

Cherry Pie Cannabis Strain to Relieve Stress & Anxiety

Hybrid Cultivar, Product Review

[Durban Poison x Grand Daddy Purple][60% Indica]

Sometimes my first experience with a strain is in back genetics, that is how I first met Cherry Pie. I noticed that the strain was a back genetic in Girl Scout Cookies which I absolutely love. So when I finally had the opportunity to medicate with Cherry Pie herself I was so dang excited. Bay Area growers restructured the classic Cherry Kush to create this relaxing and uplifting hybrid strain that is taking the medical states by storm. The strain can be found at different dispensaries in Arizona and is worthwhile for anyone with chronic pain, insomnia or severe anxiety. This isn’t a super heavy strain so don’t worry beginners, you can enjoy this medication too.

How Does It Hit the Senses?

Bud structure of Cherry Pie is bulbous and more rounded than other more spear or pine tree shaped nuggets. It is so blanketed in trichomes that the color appears almost light green with tinges of deep reddish purple. These trichomes that are found generously coated across the bud make each nugget super sticky, you’ll gum up a cheap grinder with this one. In the smell there is a rich blackberry sweetness that is only complimented by a bright saffron that combines to push forth an almost minty aroma. Real Cherry Pie will have a hint of Thin Mints in both the flavor and the taste of the smoke.

What are the Effects?

Medicinal effects will begin to take hold anywhere from 3-10 minutes after inhalation. Effects begin in the ocular region and immediately take hold in the mind where you’ll feel an immense need to just let go. Cherry Pie will have you feeling uplifted and ready to take on the day, no matter what it entails. There will be some minor pain relief as the effects slowly loosen up the intricate muscles surrounding the spine. Manage both stress and anxiety with an extremely alert and active mind for the first couple of hours after medicating. There is a bit of an Indica couch lock that creeps in as the bud begins to wear off, beware of those overwhlemingly lethargic feelings.

Top 10 Cannabis Hybrids for Daytime Pain Relief

Cannabis, Hybrid Cultivar, Product Review

Cannabis is such a powerful medicine, especially when it comes to relieving pain and inflammation. It is proven that the right cannabis strains can remove pain, unfortunately a lot of those strains can cause lethargy and even some semi-narcoleptic sleeping habits. There are some key strains for those dealing with all day muscle or joint pain. Everyone is different so not every strain on this list will be pain relieving for you or available for your mind during the day.

That is precisely why I artfully crafted 10 of the hybrid strains that do the job for me, but I hope that you try them after a day’s work your first time in order to assess their specific effects on you. Also, each batch of a strain is different. For example, sometimes a batch of Blueberry Cough comes out that just blows my mind and makes my brain flip backwards. For that reason please always try a new strain out when you have nothing to do for an hour or so and can just settle into the effects that it may have.

With a proper knowledge of these strains it is possible that those on heavy pain management systems can cut their opiod intake and live off of natural products. This will drastically improve your healthy and help you feel more… yourself. If challenging a strict pain management pill regimen is a goal of yours I’d also recommend CBD tincture supplements along with medicating with cannabis through other methods.

This beautiful little strain was originally grown in Santa Cruz and was one of the first hybrids that I had ever heard about that was about 50/50. Now with epic hydro grows everywhere this strain can be up to 80% Sativa, it all depends on the grow/er. What I love about Blue Dream is that it helps you maintain focus while also dissipating muscle tension and joint pain. The strain will grow in pointy little pine trees that are bright green with undertones of blues. It is a great fit for anyone suffering with pain all day but can’t handle Indica strains at all with out feeling lethargic.

  • God’s Gift [GDP x OG Kush]

I can never find God’s Gift anymore but oh jeez, this was truly named correctly. The combination of Grand Daddy Purple’s legendary pain relieving power and OG Kush’s mellow sativa dominant, airy joy is utterly divine. Enjoy feeling lifted mentally so that the psychosomatic pain is no worry, original OG Kush can create a complete void of anxiety. Layered on top of that wonderful effect is the knockout power of GDP which can make a patient fall asleep but in the case of God’s Gift it won’t because of the back genetics of OG. Definitely try this strain at home in a comfortable setting before trying to function at work, after all effects can all be different.

With the back genetics of White Widow and Haze you wouldn’t think that Moby would deliver the kind of pain relief, but it most certainly does. I think some of the relief from chronic aches and pains in this strain in psycho semantic from all of the happy joy that comes bubbling off of you after medicating with Moby Dick cannabis. It is ideal for those dealing with anxiety and/or depression. The most fabulous of side effects is thanks to the high CBD content. While making you feel so genuinely happy to be alive, Moby Dick will also relieve pain and make your body feel bright and airy. The perfect strain for when you’re dealing with menstrual pain, PMS and cramps.

I hadn’t ever seen this cannabis hybrid until I came to Arizona, when I met her it was love at first sight. A grower that worked at the dispensary I was hired at had created the strain from two seeds. Blueberry Cough ellipses the mind in a decadent layered high, it is truly rich in flavor and it dissipates pain on even the worst of days for me. The Strawberry Cough genetic keeps you just shy of a full on Indica Blueberry brain and just cognitive enough to keep it together during the work day. Blueberry Cough rides the line of the epic pain relief hybrid that is both stimulating and relaxing, like a cup of lavender peppermint tea.

After the famous movie this is a much sought after strain, and I think the movie depicted the devil may care attitude that Pineapple Express most certainly will evoke. Train wreck keeps the mind right, active and alert; perfect for work. Hawaiian genetics are what relieve the pain, together they make what was once an all out painful day livable. Still feel motivated and ready to get some stuff done but no longer worry about those tight shoulders or that ankle that has been hurting lately.

  • Cookie Monster [OG Kush x Girl Scout Cookies]

Omnomnomnom. I haven’t had any Cookie Monster since I moved from the Bay in 2013 but I can seriously remember it like it was yesterday. Oh jeez, it is delightful. The buds are big, beautiful balls of joy that smell like a cookie baked just for you by mother earth herself. This is definitely one of the heavier ones on the list, the Indica of the two back genetics is far stronger than the sativa. What is so noteworthy about Cookie Monster is the complete body buzz and muscle tension relief that is imminent when medicating with it. As a high tolerance patient I was able to medicate with this one during the day but that is not the case for everyone, always test new strains out in the comfort of your home.

  • Harlequin [Colombian Gold x Thai x Swiss Sativa]

Harlequin is a very special strain because it’s a CBD rich option that has very little to no THC. That means that there is no psychoactive effect, in fact you’ll barely feel “high”. You will, however, have an amazing release from inflammation which will create substantial pain relief. With these strains, you could take an entire joint to the face and not have any brain jumbling or lethargy. If you do want a small bit of psychoactive effects I’d suggest topping a bowl with some kief or hash. When you first medicate with Harlequin it will be more obvious when the effects wear off than when they take effect. Be patient and observant, CBD strains are the most medicinal of all cannabis to the mainstream. They’re the gateway to legalization so it’s time to get on board.

Enjoy Pineapple Queen on those days that you just simply can’t, just. can. not. It hits heavy and takes the  edge off of what otherwise would have been a tense day. On the hybrid spectrum PineQueen is a bit more Indica dominant so it’s another that can be too heavy for some during the day. Bliss and relief overcome you after medicating with the earthy sweet cannabis hybrid. It is also an ideal strain for the connoisseur because generally buds grow dense and just packed with trichomes. Pineapple Queen is one of my favorites and most of that is due to the release that it gives my muscles and joints.

  • Cataract Kush [LA Confidential x OG Kush]

One of those strains that is named for the ailments that it cures, Cataract Kush gives just that, release from the inflammation that makes cataracts such a pain. Similarly it releases all inflammation and makes your arms and legs feel as if they’re floating on air. It won’t be the most showy bud but Cataract Kush will deliver the most delightful effect, even when it isn’t cured properly. Don’t worry about being too overwhelmed, Cataract is a gentle strain and won’t overwhelm even a newb patient.

  • Sour Kush / Headband [OG Kush x Sour Diesel]

Last but not least, Sour Kush also known as Headband. I’d call this the most controversial on the list because when I’ve had the strain known as Sour Kush it relieves my pain while keeping my mind sharp. But when I have had Headband I always feel a big out of control with my anxiety and mouth with no pain relief, much like a full Sativa makes me feel. Maybe it is simply the power of suggestion, I”m not sure, either way it is worth a try. Sour Kush pulls my energy down from my shoulders to mellow my entire body, amazing. Sour Diesel genetics allow the medication to bring a clear mind while relieving pain.
