3 Kings OG For a Productive & Anxiety Free Day

Hybrid Cultivar, Product Review

[Sour Diesel x Headband x OG Kush][Sativa Dominant Hybrid]

We took a trip to Southern California to see my gorgeous cousin get married in what can only be described as the coolest wedding I’ve ever been to. Since we were going through LA I had to make a stop at a dispensary and get some of that bomb. You see, Arizona is very arid and on top of that very very few growers are taking the time to cure their buds. Seriously they pick it right off of the plant and sell it to their patients, it blows my mind.

So obviously CA buds last longer, taste better and give a more clean effect. Not to mention you can get 3x better stuff for the 1/2 the price due to the saturated market. With all of these powers combined plus the fact that the good homie lived there, Venice was a necessary stop on our trip. Cowbae is a HUGE fan of CA Ocean Grown (OG) strains, when I had just moved from the state I was sooooo sick of them because every dispensary was dying to shove 100 different OG strains down my throat. But now that smell of that real sticky OG makes me salivate, and 3 Kings has the wonderful combination of heavy body high and extra buzzy brain that first made OG Kush so popular.

How Does it Hit the Senses?

Earthy lemons. That is always what I smell with an inhale of any OG Kush hybrid. And that aroma is only made deeper by the added Diesel and Headband genetics. It is actually kind of fun because the more lemony an OG strain smells the more Sativa it is, the more pungent and musky it smells the more Indica it contains. 3 Kings OG first hits the nostril with a spiced lemon aroma, notes of fresh cardamom and bright bergamot. Buds are as dense as rocks and the structure is bulbous and chunky. Dark and kelly green leaves combine in a sea of brown orange hairs and brilliant white milky trichomes. When inhaled you will taste a spiced bergamot flavor amongst the thick smoke.

What Are The Effects?

Within minutes the brain will begin to flutter and the ocular system will start to feel a surge of energy from the Sativa cannabis strain. This is where some people can get some anxiety from smoking Sativas, just ride out this surge because it will mellow out. Don’t allow yourself to get too introspective in the first moments of medicating, be comfortable. As the tension in the mind finds release it dissipates into the body like honey, delivering a heavy dose of muscle relaxation from the neck and shoulders and eventually down to the hips and sciatic nerves. Although there is some great pain relief  associated with 3 Kings OG, it is most well known for the stimulating energy it provides the mind and body. Feel motivated, ready to take on the day and anxiety free. Let the stress fly out the window and just focus on checking things off of your list when medicating with this amazing OG Kush hybrid, a new designer OG on the list for me.

Great for anyone suffering from severe stress or anxiety, a nice strain to try for migraines as Sour Diesel has some anti-migraine properties. Daytime pain relief is accessible with this strain provided your pain isn’t all the way to 8-10 on the scale.

The Origins of Carajuana

Lifestyle

I’ve been writing on this blog for awhile and it was all under the assumption that I was giving people instruction on how to utilize cannabis as a medicine. But recently it was called to my attention that not everyone automatically assumes that’s the case. In honor of 420 I thought that I would share with the interwebs exactly what cannabis as medicine means to me. In high school and even my first year of college, smoking weed was a recreational thing. I use that vernacular because cannabis is medicine, weed is a party drug; shifting the perspective starts with specification of vernacular. Anyways, it wasn’t until I quit college soccer and started medicating my severe depression and mild anxiety with binge alcoholism that I began to search elsewhere for a means of medicating this internal pain.

I was drinking quite a lot of vodka every single night until I threw up or passed out with the spins. I had sallow, yellowed and broken out skin and never had good digestive tendencies; everything hurt. A therapist had told me to take anti-depressants but I was REALLY on the fence about messing with my body chemistry like that. My roommate at the time was a medical cannabis patient in California and drew me into her world of cannabis. Going into a dispensary for the first time opened my eyes to the different strains, edibles and hashes that existed in the world. I was enthralled that the right cannabis strain or product could remove my depression and anxiety while also not making me barf my brains out and feel like shit. It seemed silly that the whole world wasn’t hip to the jive of this beautiful plant. Around this time I also started practicing yoga and I found that the combination of the two was pretty legendary. Right then and there I set a goal to make it a priority in my life to share with other people that they can overcome their severe depression with the right combination of different holistic methods. You don’t always have to medicate yourself and remove the color and vibrancy from your life, take a different step first.

After about 5 years medicating I was called up to the big leagues. That means that I got a job at one of the hippest cannabis dispensaries in San Francisco city. I felt on top of the world and I immediately decided that I needed to be a sponge. That I now had the opportunity to learn from the source of retail and come into contact with all aspects of the medical cannabis industry. Since the industry wasn’t very researched yet, I think that the most important and educational experiences for me in the dispensary scene were conversations with my fellow budtenders (now consultants.) With out research most of the knowledge was gathered from field work, meaning that we all talked about strains and their effects and learned about these things from each other. Flash forward and I’ve now worked at 4 dispensaries in 2 states and have used my little brain sponge to gather so much valuable & reliable information. With all of these little tips and tricks I plan to keep myself and my family as healthy as possible, and I also hope to post information here as a means to share my passion for natural health and wellness with all of you. Happy 420 to all of you beautiful human beings, please remember that cannabis is medicine and use this holiday for the greater good! If you’re at Hippy Hill give a cop a Highhh five and then shout “CARAAAJUAANNNAA” and run away for me.

Black Diamond Cannabis Indica Strain Review

Indica Cultivar, Product Review

[Blackberry x Diamond Kush][100% Indica]

There are two ailments that I would commonly hear at the dispensary that always warranted at least a sample of Black Diamond: Nausea and Pain. The strain is High Mountain Health grown in Flagstaff, Arizona and has been a house strain at that dispensary for years.  Black Diamond is aptly named for being an expert only Indica, it will make a beginning patient feel sleepy. I like to tell the story of when I got cashew poisoning or the flu (I stopped trying to decide which thing happened). I dealt with stomach cramps what I can only image being compared to growing an alien baby inside of you. Long story short, a bong rip of Black Diamond cured all of my nausea to the point that I was able to sit down at a restaurant and eat for the first time in 3 days. It is a magical cure for stomach ailments and the full body pain relaxation doesn’t hurt either.

How Does It Hit The Senses?

The first thing you will notice every time you’re in the vicinity of Black Diamond is that the whole room fills with a sweet, blackberry aroma. That smell of Blackberry cannabis brings back so many memories of being a young patient in San Francisco that perhaps there is some nostalgia associated with Black Diamond sessions. Seriously though, nothing but the smell of sweet, sweet fruit fills the nostril. Buds are structured like perfect little Pine trees in a mixture of dark purple and kelly green hues. Long, light orange hairs are blanketed over the buds along with icy trichomes. On inhalation the sweet blackberry taste remains, but is paired with a rich cocoa.

What is the Effect?

Effects from Black Diamond take hold first in the spine, slowly creeping up and down the body to relax muscle tension. You’ll feel aches and pains that have become normal slowly dissipate in the first moments of inhalation. Once the creeping effects reach the head you’ll begin to feel a brief relaxation of the mind quickly taken over by a curiosity of thought. The mind always begins to wander for the first moments of a Black Diamond high. Eventually while thought is illuminated the strain begins to hit the ocular nerves and muscles around the eye. Once this effect takes hold it is a quick free fall into Indica territory. I like to describe this strain as one of those rides at the County Fair where you’re strapped into a chair on a giant tall mechanism that slowly brings you up to a peak where you can see just for a moment pure clarity and then BANG!! you’re down. It will take you up to an almost Sativa feeling and then just drop you to a deep Indica effect, this is why I wouldn’t recommend this for all Insomniacs. If you’re mind cannot be stimulated before sleep then choose a more pure relaxation oriented strain like Granddaddy Purple or Purple Kush. Otherwise enjoy sleep almost uncontrollably depending on the potency of the batch with Black Diamond.

Pineapple Queen: Cannabis Strain Review

Hybrid Cultivar, Product Review

[Shimla x Pineapple][65% Indica]

We play a fun game at the dispensary that I work for where we like to ask ‘What is your spirit fruit?’. It all stems from the lovely lemon faery that I mentioned in my review of Moby Dick. Basically it’s like a spirit animal, but a fruit! Well I tell you all of this because my spirit fruit is a Pineapple, and Pineapple Queen (also known as Pine Queen) could also be called my spirit strain.

It has a divine fruit filled smell and harnesses all of the beautiful Indica properties that heal my heart while still keeping an active mind. We slowly toked on a gram of this nug while cowboying on horseback for six straight hours, let me tell you that my sit bones would not have made it without the queen involved. I believe there is a dispute between growers between the name Pine Queen and Pineapple Queen, but since I’m a pineapple I will go with the latter.

How Does It Hit Your Senses?

Each bud is so dense it’s a waste not to use a proper herb grinder when preparing it for toking. Each fat pine tree changes between a dark forest green and a frosted emerald green. Pistils are dispersed in light orange brown tufts throughout each nugget. When you get your nose into it you’ll first experience a rich tropical pineapple aroma followed by a sweet sandalwood finish.  The taste is just as delicious as the smell. You can taste the pineapple notes and rich musk so intensely when you finally take a hit.

Pine Queen is an easier strain to grow, it gets huge quickly and flowers in 9-13 weeks.

What is the Effect?

Effects take place almost immediately and are quite strong. You will immediately feel sedated and relaxed, these things combined can create a silliness in your mood. Attempting to do work or any task that requires complete focus can be hard when medicating with Pine Queen. You will definitely experience a heavy eye and a release of pressure in your cranium. In my experience I feel the pressure in my brain release and melt way the neck and shoulder pain that haunts my daily existence. This is very welcome, if you couldn’t tell. Ride out the effects, it may be intense at first to feel the release of your tensions and for a beginner it can get a bit uncomfortable at first. This is why I recommend trying a strain when you are in a completely comfortable place with people you trust, if not alone.

You’ll get a solid 3-5 hours of effects from Pineapple Queen, she’s a strong lady. Enjoy this beauty if you’ve been very stressed out. She will help to stimulate your appetite if you’re body actually needs food, no unnecessary munchies here. As you reach the middle hours of the effects you’ll feel a soft relaxation carry you through until they wear off. An advanced patient can use this for daytime pain relief but beginners should always stick to the evening with this one.

Caramel Ice: A Cannabis Strain Review

Hybrid Cultivar, Product Review

[Genetics Unknown][70% Indica][12.1%THC]

Our dispensary lists this truly phenomenal strain as genetics unknown, but in my other research I have found some Caramel Ice from seed companies. It makes me curious about further following up on where this came from, but I haven’t gotten an answer from our cultivation team yet. The research I have done has Caramel Ice listed as a mixture of Caramela and Red Skunk or Caramela and Super Skunk. Until I hear from our specific team I won’t change this post, but the effects are true to the genetics that I’ve listed here.

With Caramel Ice you will find a most phenomenal Indica dominant cannabis hybrid. It is great for those not susceptible to drowsiness with Indica strains. A patient who takes a lot of opioids will find this a great pain relief for day time, as their tolerance tends to be a bit higher.

How Does It Hit Your Senses?

This beautiful cannabis strain creates large, delightful smelling flowers. Buds will be a forest green with tinges of frosted brown. The pistils are orange brown in color and spread equally throughout the botanicals. They grow into spindly but dense pine tree shaped cones and give off an unmatchable aroma. One whiff of Caramel Ice and you first receive a sharp, astringent smell of eucalyptus followed by a heavy, rich vanilla hazelnut. The flowers literally smell like caramel and ice, which could totally be word association with my sub conscious but where is the fun in that! As the flower cures the smell becomes sweeter and sweeter. When you take a hit, my preferred method is a water bong, it tastes like saffron patchouli as the brightness and sweetness of the smell combine.

The strain is said to have a large resistance to mold and take about 70 days to flower. I believe it should be alright for beginner growers. Beware of the thin stems while flowering as the big buds won’t always be supported.

What Is The Effect?

Effects will take place within 10 seconds to a minute starting by floating right up to the brain. My initial feelings were release from stress and a great relaxation in the mind. Slowly I felt pain relief drip down my spine and deliver itself to the areas in need. It relieved my constant nagging shoulder pain within moments and my truly bad neck pain in mere minutes. After about 5 minutes the thick ocular stone begins to set in, and you get that familiar droop eye of an Indica smoker. This ocular effect I’m speaking of is also really intense in the Blueberry Cough I reviewed a while back. As the strain works its magic you will find yourself void of life’s daily stresses AND life’s aches and pains.

You will experience these effects anywhere from 2-5 hours, it is an intermediate hitter when it comes to length. Keep this one handy after a really intense day at the office or when you’re in need of instantly hitting the relax button. This is fantastic for anyone who deals with intense anxiety or stress, especially related to adrenal fatigue. It is a fantastic choice for daytime pain relief, and gives a minor bit of munchies but only if you’re already hungry.

Moby Dick: A Cannabis Strain Review

Hybrid Cultivar, Product Review

[Haze x White Widow][65% Sativa][18.2% THC & 3.5% CBD]

I’ve been meaning to write this review for awhile now, mostly because this strain is so absolutely wonderful for almost EVERYONE. Not only have boyfriend and I play wrestled for almost an hour like joyous little kids after medicating with this strain, but it can uplift any ornery mood while also giving some pain relief with very little to no lethargic side effects. After running into my favorite lemon faery at the farmer’s market this morning I decided today’s the day to finally review her favorite strain.

Moby Dick first got attention when it won the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1995 on behalf of creator Dinafem Seeds. It was originally bred specifically for medicinal use and is a fabulous option for anyone undergoing chemotherapy since it has epic appetite stimulation.

How Does It Hit Your Senses?

This cannabis strain can range from a more loose bound bud to an extremely dense one depending on grow cycles. I guarantee that your grow will harvest at least one behemoth show bud. The nuggets are vibrantly light yellow green with deep hints of dark forest green sprinkled delicately throughout. Trichomes glitter all over and nugs are straight up dank. It will always hit your nostrils abruptly with a lemony pine scent that is unmistakable. The aroma finishes with a deep sandalwood for a very rounded smell scape. Your first hit will entirely retain all of the brightness that assaulted your senses when you smelled the strain, inhalation and exhalation are equal in bright lemon piney goodness. The flavor sends a richness throughout your sinus passages that is warm and inviting.

It is an intermediate strain to cultivate that takes about 10 weeks to flower. It grows well both in and outdoors but I’d recommended indoors as it requires specific lighting wattage. Test your pH twice daily if possible to avoid anything too high as it greatly effects these genetics. If you pay attention and treat her right, Moby is an extremely high yielder.

What Is The Effect?

For me Moby Dick takes immediate effect directly to my mind, I can actually feel pressure in my brain release in the first couple of moments after medicating. After the initial mental lift the release moves through the face to release eye and facial muscle tension. Slowly in the next five minutes you will feel the body pain and muscular tension slowly drip out of your system. I want to be clear about the special nature of this strain, it not only tests with the best of them in THC content but it also has an extremely high CBD level in comparison to almost every other sativa dominant strain. This combination of mentally uplifting euphoria (THC) and anxiety & pain relief (CBD) creates the perfect storm of happiness and relaxation. The coming hour after medicating with Moby Dick you will feel, as lemon faery puts it, like a cartoon in the most welcome way. You feel playful, joyful and most of all pain free.

Effects will take hold for about 2-5 hours. You will most certainly feel the hunger, just have some healthy snacks made and a big bottle of water near by. Moby awakens the tummy and can help to relieve any nausea; making it a great choice for anyone in need of help with their appetite. I also recommend this to any patient who has issues with mood imbalance, depression, anxiety or heavy stress. And I especially recommend it to all my ladies out there during their moon. It will make you stop hating everything for no reason, crying when you see things for no reason and basically all those ridiculous signs of PMS.. except the ones that compel you to eat a whole package of oreos.. it just helps that one out. It is possible you could feel drowsy about 4-6 hours after medicating, test for the first time in a safe zone in the afternoon as to not upset your sleeping cycle.

Super Skunk Cannabis Strain Review

Hybrid Cultivar, Product Review

[Skunk #1 x Afghani][90% Indica][18% THC]

I find that a lot of strains that people only consider for sleeping, I prefer all day long. Super Skunk is one of those, for the sensitive Indica smoker it may knock you right out for a peaceful night’s sleep. However for me it provides a calmness and relaxed state that makes me able to start my day, continue on with my day OR pass out after my day is through.

The strain first appeared in 1990 in Amsterdam and by 1992 had won the Cannabis Cup there in the mostly Indica genre with a 3rd place appearance in the all around. With the genetic parentage of an Afghani Indica and classic Sativa Skunk #1, the hybridization is old school in the friendliest sense. You’ll feel a familiarity in the effects as the Afghani relieves all your stresses and the Skunk lifts your spirits.

How Does It Hit the Senses?

These buds generally grow slightly rounded and densely packed, they’re like rocks and should definitely be ground up for the best use of your flower. The color is more of a forest green lightened by a visible array of trichomes. Dark orangey brown hairs are sprinkled methodically throughout each nugget. The first whiff delivers a layered bergamot citrus scent which finishes with a sweet cocoa aroma. The familiar skunk is not lost in this smell scape but it’s also certainly not highlighted. That skankiness found in most Skunk #1 hybrids combines with the Afghani in this cannabis strain to create the rich cocoa undertones. When you take a hit the taste is all to familiar of the wonderful scent. The richness layered in the musky orange flavor stimulates the palate. It almost delivers that sweet earth flavor on inhalation and morphs into a bright citrus on the exhalation.

Super Skunk will grow like the squatty little Indica plant that it is. It takes about 45 to 50 days to flower and is an easier strain to grow. She will perform well indoors and in a greenhouse setting located in temperate zones.

What is the effect?

For me the effects take hold in seconds by directly relieving all ocular pressure. As the muscles in the eyes begin to unwind you’ll feel a smooth wave a pain relief run first through your face and then melt down your neck and shoulders to inevitably relax your entire body. After noticing the initial physical realm of calmness you’ll begin to realize that your mind is also releasing all of the anxieties that formerly took weight. You will get anywhere from 1-3 hours of effect from this flower, as I said if you are sensitive to Indica this may be a sleepy time only strain for you.

It will lighten your mood and give you the ability to let go of the little things, personally a welcome feeling in my daily existence. Riding out the effects of Super Skunk is a pleasant experience, like taking a little row boat out on a calm evening. For your first time medicating with Super Skunk make sure you test it in the evening in a safe, comfortable setting. Everyone’s body is different and it is best to try anything 70% Indica or above with the ability to remain safe if you feel a wave of sleep coming on. Safety is key!

DJ Short's Flo Cannabis Strain Review

Product Review

[Purple Thai x Afghani][60% Sativa]

This strain was created by the master of Blueberry himself, DJ Short out of Colorado. Then it was shipped out to Amsterdam. The hybridization combines two absolutely classic strains for an uplifting, true hybrid. I was extremely excited to see this strain because I am a huge fan of DJ Short’s Blueberry. Flo delivers that soft and airy vibe of the Blueberry with an active and stimulated mind of the Purple Thai back genetics.

How Does It Hit The Senses?

You will see Flo buds grow in dense, light green hues with almost purple undertones. There are short fat orange hairs all throughout the flower. The smell hits you first with a sprig of citrus and ends with a bright earth pine, sort of like lemongrass sprouting from fresh soil. I found the Flo takes me a couple of hits to really ‘get there’, but it is a perfect strain for the medical cannabis beginner and will last about 1-2 hours. If you’re looking to grow this strain it will have about 60 day flowering and can be grown in or outdoor, but loves a greenhouse setting.

What is It’s Effect?

So this is a super functional high, so much so it can feel just plain normal for some. In the medical cannabis world that is a major thumbs up fact about a strain. As I hit this one it starts between my eyes and works its way back through my brain. An almost immediate body buzz emanates throughout your muscular system as you feel our cares float away. As most 60% Sativa hybrids go, it is very mentally active while still remaining a teensy bit dreamy in the mind. The body will experience slight relief form nausea and gastro intestinal issue. You may find yourself locked to the couch about 20 minutes in, but if your general demeanor is that of getting things done the Flo will be a nice avenue with which to do your errands.

Use This For Relief From: This strain can aid in the relief of stress, nausea, stomach pain and issue, and depression. As this is another hybrid it will help to balance those with adrenal issues caused by things such as PTSD.

Northern Lights #5

Product Review

[Afghani Indica x Thai Sativa][90% Indica]

I have a deep seeded love affair with the Northern Lights strain. In California I became well acquainted with Northern Lights #10 and now in Arizona our house strain is Northern Lights #5. The genetics of this beauty are somewhat elusive, but it seems to have been developed by Neville Schoenmaker in the Netherlands in 1985. He created Northern Lights #1-11 and #5 and #1 are said to be the strongest. All of these numbered girls should be guaranteed to deliver classic Indica plants due to their lineage from Afghani, the most coveted of Indica land race strains. While it was released as a pure Indica, as the strain has developed it has been crossed with a Thai Sativa which creates a slight hybrid effect.

These little nugs are light, bright green and dripping in trichomes. They grow in a dense, ball-like structure and dispay prominent light brown-orange stamen. Take a big whiff and enjoy a sweet, delicate berry laden aroma. Once you taste it you’ll experience a thick smoke with fruit salad flavor that will finish in a rich pine. It is a resilient, short fat plant and only flowers about 45-50 days.

When medicating strain effects take place 5-10 seconds after exhalation. You will begin to experience a sensation first in the nasal passages that moves straight to the body and mind simultaneously. The mental clarity stirs an almost psychedelic creative spark of energy while the body feels gentle relief, like a warm blanket of relaxation melting down your spine and back into the earth through your toes. Ultimately the Indica wins and takes you into a comfortable, melty realm that can be phenomenal for getting to sleep more easily and actually staying asleep. The strain is also a good appetite stimulant and has been known to provide relief from muscle spasms, depression and stress.Just be sure to keep your water near by as it causes quite the dry mouth. Northern Lights also blends wonderfully in glycerin and alcohol tinctures.
